Starlink (Low Earth Orbit): Works Well for VoIP
Starlink uses a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, delivering latency of approximately 20–60 milliseconds — comparable to many terrestrial broadband connections. This is well within the acceptable range for VoIP, which requires latency under 150 ms for clear, natural-sounding calls. DVGVoIP has customers running 3CX on Starlink in remote Northern Ontario communities, and call quality is consistently good.
What to expect on Starlink:
- Latency: 20–60 ms typical, occasionally spiking during network congestion or weather.
- Bandwidth: More than sufficient for VoIP — even with multiple concurrent calls.
- Occasional brief dropouts during satellite handoffs, which may cause a momentary audio glitch but rarely drop the call entirely.
Starlink Business (priority access) provides more consistent performance than Starlink Residential during peak hours. For businesses relying on VoIP as their primary phone system, the Business tier is worth considering.
Fixed Wireless: Also Works Well
Fixed wireless internet (point-to-point or tower-based) is common in Northern Ontario towns that lack fibre. Latency is typically 10–30 ms with stable throughput, making it a strong option for VoIP. If your fixed wireless provider offers QoS (Quality of Service) settings or a dedicated voice VLAN, enabling those will further improve call reliability.
Traditional Geostationary Satellite: Not Recommended
Older satellite internet services — such as HughesNet or Xplornet's legacy geostationary plans — orbit at approximately 36,000 km altitude. This results in round-trip latency of 500–700 milliseconds, which causes severe delays in VoIP conversations. You will hear yourself echo, experience constant talk-over, and callers will think the line has gone dead during pauses. DVGVoIP does not recommend VoIP on geostationary satellite connections.
If geostationary satellite is your only available internet, contact DVGVoIP for an honest assessment. In some cases, a cellular backup (LTE/5G) can be used for voice traffic while satellite handles data.
Tips for Best VoIP Performance on Starlink
- Use a router with QoS (Quality of Service) and prioritize VoIP traffic (SIP/RTP) over general web browsing and file downloads.
- Consider using the G.729 codec instead of G.711 — it uses roughly one-eighth the bandwidth per call, which helps when bandwidth is shared.
- Place the Starlink dish with a clear view of the sky — obstructions cause momentary signal loss that can affect call quality.
- Avoid running large file uploads or video streams during important calls, or use QoS to ensure voice packets are prioritized.
- Keep your Starlink firmware up to date — SpaceX regularly improves latency and stability through software updates.
