We measure the four metrics that determine VoIP call quality: latency, jitter, download speed, and upload speed.

What we measure

  • Latency — round-trip time between your network and our server. High latency causes noticeable delays mid-conversation.
  • Jitter — consistency of packet delivery. High jitter produces choppy, robotic audio even on fast connections.
  • Download speed — incoming voice data. Each 3CX call uses roughly 100 kbps.
  • Upload speed — outgoing voice data. Often the bottleneck for rural and Northern Ontario connections.
Northern Ontario note: Satellite and rural DSL connections often have high latency or asymmetric speeds. We'll flag any issues and suggest options.

What Your Results Mean

VoIP quality depends on all of these working together. Here's what each one affects.

Latency

How fast packets travel between your office and the VoIP server. Under 80 ms is excellent; under 150 ms is acceptable. Satellite connections typically measure 600–700 ms and are not recommended for VoIP without QoS configuration.

Jitter

Variation in packet delivery timing. Under 20 ms is excellent. High jitter causes choppy audio and is common on congested shared connections — often fixable with a VoIP-aware router and QoS rules.

Bandwidth

Each simultaneous 3CX call uses ~100 kbps upload and download. A 10 Mbps symmetric connection can comfortably handle 80+ concurrent calls. Upload speed is usually the constraint — especially on DSL and cable plans.
