3CX V20 Update 9 Alpha: New Web Client, AI & Queues

3CX has released the Alpha build of V20 Update 9 — the next step in the V20 platform that powers most DVGVoIP customers’ phone systems. This release introduces the most significant visual overhaul of the 3CX Web Client to date, alongside meaningful improvements to call queue handling for call centres and further refinements to the AI features introduced in Update 8.

Before going further, one important caveat: Alpha builds are for evaluation only. 3CX explicitly does not recommend installing Update 9 Alpha on a production phone system. For DVGVoIP customers, that means we’ll be testing it internally and on lab systems — your production PBX stays on the current stable build until Update 9 reaches Release Candidate and then Final. What follows is a preview of what’s coming, not an action item for this week.

The New Web Client Look

The most visible change in Update 9 is a redesigned Web Client, with updates concentrated in three areas:

  • Team view — reorganized so presence, extensions and status are easier to read at a glance. Useful for reception and front-desk staff who need to know who’s available in real time.
  • Dialer — a cleaner, more intuitive layout for placing and transferring calls from the browser.
  • Navigation — revised menus and controls so less-used features are easier to find without adding clutter.

The Web Client also picks up a long-requested feature in this release: light and dark mode. Staff who work late shifts or in low-light environments — after-hours call handlers, dispatchers, healthcare reception covering evenings — no longer have to stare at a white screen all day.

None of these changes alter how the phone system works. They change how staff interact with it. That usually means a short adjustment period followed by faster day-to-day use, especially for teams that live in the Web Client rather than on desk phones.

Queue Improvements for Call Centres and Busy Offices

Update 9’s queue enhancements are aimed primarily at enterprise call centres, but several of them are directly useful for any Northern Ontario business running a sales queue, support line, or multi-agent reception pool. Three stand out:

Time-Based Escalation. Calls sitting in a queue past a configured threshold can now escalate automatically — to a supervisor, a backup group, or an external number. For a Thunder Bay professional services firm where a missed call can cost a new client, this is a real improvement over the previous all-or-nothing overflow behaviour.

Cumulative Ringing. Skill groups can be added to a ringing call progressively, so multiple groups can ring simultaneously as the call ages in the queue. In practice: the first-tier team rings for a set period, and if nobody picks up, the next tier is added rather than replacing the first. More agents hear the ring the longer a caller waits — without the jarring cut-off that comes with traditional overflow.

Cumulative Distribution (skill-based routing). A new distribution option inside skill-based routing lets you control how calls are handed out across skill groups of different sizes and skill levels. This is the kind of control that larger customer service teams have been asking for — letting you weight distribution by expertise rather than raw availability.

For most Northern Ontario SMBs, these features won’t change day-to-day call flow. For call centres and any business that routes calls to specialist teams (IT helpdesks, clinic triage, accounting tax-season lines), they meaningfully improve how wait time is handled.

AI Refinements

Update 9 continues the AI work that began with Update 8. The release notes mention improvements across three fronts:

  • Underlying AI models — the real-time voice models powering 3CX AI agents continue to get faster and more capable, which directly affects how natural an AI receptionist sounds to callers.
  • Prompt handling and the Personal Assistant — better prompt behaviour, giving admins finer control over how AI agents respond and when they hand off to a human.
  • AI routing based on topics — calls can be routed by the topic the AI agent identifies during the conversation, not just by the DID or menu choice. For multi-service offices (reception handling sales, support and billing on the same number), this makes automated routing far more useful than a traditional IVR.

Because DVGVoIP’s own 3CX receptionist (Laura, on dvgtech.3cx.ca) already runs on this AI stack, we’ll see the effect of these refinements directly. What matters for customers evaluating an AI agent today is that the platform is improving every release — the 3CX AI agent you deploy this quarter will get better without you having to rebuild it.

Admin Enhancements

Two smaller changes worth mentioning:

Simplified holiday prompts. Configuring holiday-hour messages has historically been one of the fiddlier admin tasks in 3CX. Update 9 streamlines the setup.

Custom VoIP Provider template builder. For partners and advanced admins connecting 3CX to carriers that aren’t already in the built-in list, this gives a structured way to build and save provider templates. For DVGVoIP, this is part of what lets us keep onboarding flexible — we aren’t locked into a predefined carrier list when a customer has an existing SIP trunk they want to keep.

Upgraded Call List with Interaction History

One change that deserves its own mention: the call list view now has interaction history built directly in. That means staff reviewing a recent call can see the full history with that caller (previous calls, transfers, agent notes) in the same place — without jumping between views. For inside sales teams and account managers, this is a small quality-of-life improvement that adds up fast.

What This Means If You’re on DVGVoIP Today

If you’re already a DVGVoIP customer running a current stable V20 build, nothing changes today. Update 9 is Alpha. We will:

  1. Test it internally against the dvgtech.3cx.ca lab system.
  2. Identify any migration considerations specific to customer deployments — custom dial plans, integrations, AI agents.
  3. Schedule upgrades once Update 9 reaches stable release, rolling out during maintenance windows with notice.

If you’re considering 3CX for the first time, what Update 9 Alpha signals is that the platform continues to invest in the Web Client, the call centre feature set, and native AI — three of the biggest decision factors for businesses comparing cloud phone systems today.
